Restaurants In Sedona

OK, here's some Sedona restaurant observations, no charge, take it or leave it:

Schezuan -- Excellent chinese food with an authentic tingle for the taste buds. One of the nicest interiors to any restaurant in Sedona, especially impressive considering that the prices are not bad at all. You can eat for between $8 and $18 per person. Service is hit and miss. Most of the staff seem eager to please, but I've had a couple of occasions where I got a less than enthusiastic waitress and had to wave down a manager to get my water glass refilled. The attached martini bar is cute but small -- The Tuesday night bartender is excellent and personable.

Cafe India -- I had dinner at the this Indian Restaurant in Sedona today and was not impressed with the service. Although the waitress cracked a smile once or twice, she most often looked annoyed. In fact, everyone who worked there appeared to be wishing there were anywhere else. It wasn't the worst service I've ever had. Hey, they DID refill the water, etc. But it was certainly NOT friendly service.

Pizza Picazzo -- Super pizza. My friends always want to go there. But noisy. Service is usually great, especially if you like the young chicky-types. Best to eat outside on the patio on a nice evening.

My two cents on the eateries in Sedona I've been to recently:

Pizza Picazzo - great pizza but you'll be waiting at your table for a good bit before your food arrives. Have a beer and bring someone you don't mind staring at.

PJ's Pub - Better food than the average bar. But it's still a bar. Good community feel. Not a place for a suit and tie. Now that the smoking ban is on, you have to go to the patio which is a bit cramped but I shouldn't be smoking anyway.

Oak Creek Brewery in Talaqapaque - Great beer. Good pizza. But too much on the menu to specialize. I'd prefer to go to the Yavapai Dr. version and just have a beer.

Hideaway - Good lasagna, OK price Italian food. A bit dark if you're not on a date. And feels a bit dated inside.

Sedona Memories - Great sandwiches at a fair price but if you don't want everything including the kitchen sink on your sandwich, you better tell them. They automatically put avacado and sprouts and mayo it seems. Or maybe they were just being nice to me.

Wildflower Bakery - Good, but not a lot of variety. Soups, sandwiches and pasta dishes. Easy on the wallet and they have a great glass sculpture thing in the dining room. Best dining is on the patio if it's not cold. Remember, too, you have to stand in line to order here, so it's like a cross between fast food and sit-down dining.

More from me later, too.

Sally's Mesquite Barbecue on Jordan serves a mean burger and fries. Quick lunch but tourist prices. Fun to look at their Poloroid pics of customers from around the world.

1) Sedona Memories is the best Uptown spot for lunch at a decent price, but they can be busy, and not much room to sit down and eat.

2) A friend got sick after eating at a place in West Sedona I will not name, but which has an alien theme. Could be coincidence that she got sick after eating the tuna there, could happen anywhere, but since the service was not great anyway I'll blame the restaurant.

3) While I'm complaining. Heartline Cafe is great food but I was served a dessert there that had almonds in it AFTER I told the waitress I was allergic to almonds. Could have killed me! I had to flag the waitress down and tell her to bring me the check quicly so I could go get my medication. Then they charged me for the desert that almost killed me! I haven't been back -- ashame because the food is mighty good.

4) Never had a bad experience at Reds, and always love the food. Can be expensive, but has a nice feel to it. Have heard complaints occasionally about the service, but have never had a problem with that myself.

There's a Mexican restaurant in Basha's Center that I love. It looks very simple and "chain" from the outside, but the food is very good, even the salsa has a better than ordinary authentic taste. I can't remember the name because, like the store front, it's not memorable, but the food is.

A few good sedona restaurants: Dahl & Daluca (sp?), Pizza Picazzo, Schezuan, Hideaway, Sedona Memories, Bistro Bella Terra, A Pizza Haven, The Thai restaurant at Bell Rock Plazza (in Village of Oak Creek), the Thai restaurant in West Sedona (name escapes me at moment), Wildflower Bread Company, Red Stone Cabin. I'm sure there are more -- lots of good restaurants in town -- but these are the ones I usually go to (depending on the situation). All get a thumbs-up from me.

Reds is always a good choice. Love the red plates. Expect to pay around $25 per person w/o drinks.

Word is, Barking Frog good. Barking Frog is owned and managed by the same folks as Cowboy Club, Silver Saddle and Red Brick Cabin. Plus, they "stole" the chef from Red's Restaurant (Sedona Rouge) and a lot of wait staff from other establishments. I haven't eaten there yet, but my friends who have say it is very good, but a bit over-priced.

The Sedona restaurant I really want to try soon is the place at King's Ransom Hotel / Motel. It's a tiny Mexican place, and I don't even recall the name. It's only been open a couple months, but it's getting best word-of-mouth any place in Sedona has had in years.

Some useful opinions here. I would like to add that Barking Frog in West Sedona is very good, and very beautiful -- especially the room with the open fire, but it's overpriced. I know quality food costs a few extra dollars, but there are several restaurants in Sedona with just as high-quality ingredients but lower prices. I've been to Barking Frog a few times, but unless they start offering discounts to locals, I think I'm ready to move on.

Ate at Reds once and forgot to tip waiter (local high school graduate fellow as of two years ago). He recognized me next time in, made nasty comment, served me food and--like a dumbass--I ate it. Funny looks from waiter and his friends. I was sick all night. Got better but still wonder what those assholes did.

I've heard some people give Barking Frog a bad review, but I like it. The high ceilings and warm atmosphere create a good place to sit down and relax with excellent food. The food is good quality too.
